About Us

Love to Read is an independent private tutoring and consulting practice that serves students from Kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as adults.


The owner, Mandy Horton Walker, has been trained by Wilson Language Training® and holds a Level II Certification in Wilson Reading System® (WRS).  Mandy holds and maintains the International Dyslexia Association Certified Dyslexia Therapist credential. S.P.I.R.E. is another Orton-Gillingham-based program in which Mandy has been trained and is experienced. She has also attended the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing (LiPS)® workshop.  Additionally, Mandy is certified by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning (KUCRL) as a professional developer for their Strategic Instruction Model (SIM), Learning Strategies, and Content Enhancement Routines.  Mandy holds a Masters degree in Exceptional Student Education, in which she is certified to teach Kindergarten through 12th grade, and has been teaching in public and public charter school settings since 1998.  She also holds the Florida Reading Endorsement, the Florida ESOL Endorsement, the Florida Gifted Endorsement, English (Grades 6-12),and Elementary (Grades K-6) certification. Although Mandy has taught grades Kindergarten through 12th grade, most of her classroom experience has been in middle school intensive reading and learning strategies classrooms. 

Mandy also began tutoring in 1998. She tutors clients from Kindergarten through Adulthood. Clearly, Mandy believes that every age and every stage is the best!  Mandy is absolutely dedicated to providing research-based, multi-sensory, strategic, structured language instruction for reading that serves each student as he or she grows towards his or her personal best.

Mandy’s roots in the Treasure Coast are deep, for she grew up along the banks of the Indian River after having been born on the Gulf Coast of Florida.  Returning home to be near family and to teach and tutor in the community where she first began teaching brings great joy!  It is here that Mandy began learning how to teach students to write complete sentences using the SIM Sentence Writing Strategy, encouraged and mentored by colleagues who have since retired.  Simultaneously, Mandy also began learning how to teach reading and spelling to students whose response to multi-sensory instruction was so enthusiastic, that Mandy also dove into learning the Wilson Reading System.  Thus, the homecoming to the birthplace of Mandy’s career and to the birthplace of Mandy’s grandchildren is especially sweet!
